A few years ago I decided to go on a mission to rid my life of chemicals. I got pretty radical about it, and I’ve scaled back. I decided that I really do need shampoo, and no homemade variety was working.
One staple I have kept up with is laundry detergent. I have a high efficiency washing machine and this recipe works with it. That said if you really like to wash your clothes in cold water, you might want to mix with some warm water to dissolve before adding to the washing machine.
Homemade Laundry Detergent
- Use a cheese grater to grate up bar soap. If you’re really committed to the most natural laundry detergent, you can use Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castille Bar Soap. But I use Ivory bar soap because it’s cheaper. You can get all of these items on Amazon.
- Mix 2 cups Borax, 2 Cups Washing Soda and 1 cup of your grated soap. (because I like to do this and have enough for about 6-8 weeks of laundry, I do this recipe 3x).
- Put the ingredients through a food processor and add your favorite essential oils for scent. In addition to your scent be sure to use 12 drops of a bacteria killing essential oil: Lemon, Rosemary, Basil, Oregano. I like a Rosemary & Lavender Combination or Lemon & Grapefruit.
- Store in an air tight container, use ¼ cup per laundry load
